Elastic axial extension
Calculate axial stress, strain and length change of a uniform elastic member.
A clear answer. Here’s how.
Stress=F/A, strain=stress/E, and extension=strain×original length. Positive force denotes tension and negative force compression. Assumes uniform uniaxial linear elasticity, constant area and small strain. Reports millimetres of signed length change. Buckling, temperature effects and non-elastic behaviour are not included.
