Stair layout calculator
Explore riser count, tread count and straight stair run.
A clear answer. Here’s how.
Riser count is the total rise divided by the desired riser height, rounded up. Actual risers are equal. A straight flight ending at the upper floor has one fewer tread than risers. Run = tread count × going. This geometric layout does not check local stair, landing, headroom or handrail requirements.

Worked example
A fixed demonstration, separate from the values you enter above.
- Total floor-to-floor rise (cm)
- 280
- Desired riser height (cm)
- 18
- Tread going (cm)
- 25
Example result
- Risers
- 16
- Equal riser height
- 17.5 cm
- Treads before upper floor
- 15
- Total straight run
- 3.75 m
