Latitude–longitude rectangle area
Estimate the spherical surface area inside geographic bounds.
A clear answer. Here’s how.
Area = R² × longitude span in radians × [sin(north)−sin(south)], with R=6,371 km. Edges follow parallels and meridians. If east<west, the interval crosses the antimeridian. Equal longitudes mean zero width; west=−180 and east=180 covers all longitudes. This is not an ellipsoidal cadastral area calculation.
