Bias binding fabric area
Estimate the fabric area behind a chosen length and cut width of bias strip.
A clear answer. Here’s how.
Net strip area = length × cut width. Adds your percentage allowance to that area and gives the side length of an equal-area square. This is an area estimate, not a cutting diagram or guarantee of continuous strip length; diagonal offcuts, joins, selvages and the chosen construction method can require more fabric.

Worked example
A fixed demonstration, separate from the values you enter above.
- Required cut-strip length (metres)
- 5
- Cut-strip width before folding (cm)
- 4
- Additional area allowance (%)
- 20
Example result
- Net strip area
- 2,000 cm²
- Area including allowance
- 2,400 cm²
- Equal-area square side
- 48.9897948557 cm
- Area in square metres
- 0.24
An equal-area square is an area comparison, not a verified cutting layout or continuous-strip yield.
